Alcohol consumption in Vietnam increases despite the Covid-19 pandemic

Alcohol consumption of Vietnamese people increased in 2020, from 0.9 liters/person/month in 2018 to 1.3 liters/person/month.

According to the results of the 2020 population living standard survey just announced by the General Statistics Office, alcohol consumption increased in 2020, from 0.9 liters/person/month in 2018 to 1.3 liters/person/month last year.

Notably, alcohol consumption among the better-off households also increased compared to that in the previous year. Specifically, in 2020, the wealthiest group of households consumes on average 2.4 liters of alcohol/person/month, while the poor group consumes about 1.3 liters/person/month.

The level of alcohol consumption per capita per month in 2020 by urban and rural areas also has differences. Accordingly, alcohol consumption in urban areas is 1.2 liters/month, while in rural areas at 1.3 liters/month.

According to the statistics agency’s announcement, people’s income in 2020 decreased compared to 2019 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, so the average spending level in 2020 also increased slower than in the previous period.

The average expenditure in 2020 of the whole country is only VND2,890,000 /person/month, up 13% compared to 2018. While the average spending in 2018 increased by 18% compared to 2016. By region, urban households had a monthly expenditure per capita that is 1.6 times higher than that of rural households. Accordingly, urban household spending was approximately VND3.8 million while rural households are only VND2.4 million.

The Southeast region with the highest income was also home to the highest household expenditure in the country, at approximately VND3.9 million /person/month. Compared to 2018, household spending in this area increased by 17.3%. Meanwhile, the Northern Midlands and Mountains region, where income was the lowest, was also the place for the lowest expenditure, equivalent to VND2.1 million/person/month.

In 2020, on average, each Vietnamese person spent VND2.7 million/month on living expenses, of which food and drink costs were equivalent to VND1.69 million, other expenses were about VND1.2 million.

The 2020 population living standard survey conducted by the General Statistics Office is a survey to assess the living standards, income status, and rich-poor divide of the population. The survey was conducted in 63 provinces and cities, including 46,995 households representing the whole country, urban and rural areas, 6 geographical regions, provinces, and cities.
