Vietnamese leadership announces two important positions left by disciplined senior officials

Ms. Dao Hong Lan and Mr. Tran Sy Thanh

On July 15, the Politburo of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam officially gave new tasks to a number of leaders to replace those who were disciplined for violations in recent years.

Ms. Dao Hong Lan from the position of Secretary of the Bac Ninh provincial Party Committee was appointed as Acting Minister of Health and Mr. Tran Sy Thanh was moved from the position of State Auditor General to the Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee.

The two vacancies that the two people just mentioned will replace are the positions of Health Minister and Chairman of Hanoi City, which were recently held by Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long and Chu Ngoc Anh. These two men are probed for their roles in the COVID-19 test kit case of Viet A Joint Stock Company.

Vietnam’s state media simultaneously announced and recounted the biographies of Ms. Dao Hong Lan and Mr. Tran Sy Thanh; as well as their statements when accepting new positions. Ms. Dao Hong Lan was born in 1971, her hometown of Tam Ky commune, Kinh Mon district (now Kinh Thanh district, Hai Duong province); and Mr. Tran Sy Thanh was also born in 1971 in Thanh Giang commune, Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An province.

Ms. Dao Hong Lan said that she regretted that she did not go to medical school before but was now given the position of “commander-in-chief” of this scandalous field. She said many people told her it was “courageous” to take over as health minister now.
