Xi Jinping has been elected as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China for another five years. As such, this is his third consecutive term since 2012.

The Government Information website announced the above information on October 23 and also posted the text of the congratulatory message of General Secretary of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong to Mr. Xi Jinping right after he was re-elected as the chief of the Communist Party of China for the 20th term.

Xi Jinping was also re-elected as the chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, holding the highest authority over the People’s Liberation Army. Previously, the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China elected 7 members of the new Politburo Standing Committee.

Among the members of the 20th Politburo Standing Committee, Mr. Xi Jinping, Wang Huning and Zhao Leji are re-elected members. New members include Mr. Ly Cuong, Thai Ky, Ly Hi, and Dinh Tiet Tuong.

Also on October 23, Vietnamese media reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif also sent greetings to Xi Jinping.

President Putin said he looked forward to continuing to develop a “comprehensive partnership” between Russia and China. Meanwhile, on Twitter on the same day, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote, “On behalf of the whole country of Pakistan, I congratulate President Xi Jinping on being elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of China for the third term.”
